Winter, Dominick Argento

If I Were A Bell, from Guys and Dolls by Frank Loesser

opera. Theatre. Pop/rock. Oh my.

Alyssa trained at the University of Houston (B.M. ‘14 Vocal Performance) and at the renowned New England Conservatory (M.M. ‘17 Vocal Pedagogy). Throughout and after her studies, Alyssa dedicated an enormous amount of time to, simply, whatever music excited her most.

Just behind and just around the corner:

Alyssa will be returning to Staunton, Virginia in February 2024 to sing the role of Nature in John Locke and Matthew Gibbons’ Cupid & Death at the Blackfriars Playhouse with Early Music Access Project.

She most recently performed as a voice actor and vocalist in Spiffemol Industries’ Halloween special ‘SpiffeMAUL’ in Brooklyn, NY. Alyssa kicked off the 2023 Fall season with recording sessions and private concerts for Cupid & Death, and by performing traditional and Celtic music aboard a schooner in Maine. Over the summer festival season, Alyssa joined the Utah Festival of Opera & Musical Theatre, where she worked as both a performer (Sibella and Phoebe covers / Gentleman’s Guide, Milk Seller and Featured Dancer / Oliver!, Harem Dancer and Ensemble / Aida, Soloist / Sentimental Journey) and as a director/choreographer and fight captain.

The contemporary:

Alyssa’s contemporary singing encompasses the theatre, the stadium, and the bar. Before Alyssa joined the Utah Festival for their 2023 summer season, Alyssa competed in 2022 as a Quarterfinalist in the internationally prestigious American Traditions Competition held in Savannah, GA. While there, she sang amongst the greatest voices from a multitude of genres and styles. In October 2021, she sang the world premier of Makaris’ Tam Lin in the overarching role as Narrator on Halloween, presented at THE MUSE by Five Boroughs Music Festival.

In November 2021, Alyssa sang in an off-off-Broadway reading for the new musical Dublin Rising, and in Spring 2019, Alyssa performed in Seacoast Repertory Theatre’s production of Billy Elliot (u/s Mrs. Wilkinson) and served as Dance Captain. Previously at SRT, she performed as the glamorously antagonistic Blanche Ingram in Jane Eyre. Reviews stated: "The performers are collectively an embarrassment of riches" and "Alyssa Weathersby, as Blanche, makes it easy for you to hiss at the character, every bit the mean girl, with a strong soprano voice." Other favorite theatre roles include Woman 1 (Songs for a New World), Sarah Brown (Guys & Dolls), and Tess Goode (The Sisters Rosensweig). Outside of the theatre, Alyssa has sang a lead vocalist at Prohibition on the Upper West Side and as part of an 80s cover band, The Chocolate Orb, at Houston’s infamous Numbers bar. She sang as a backup singer for Josh Groban’s 2013 tour at the Houston Toyota Center and for Andrea Bocelli’s 2014 tour. In 2016, Alyssa competed in her first pageant: she won the Miss Greater Worcester title and went on to place as runner-up for Miss Massachusetts.

The classical:

Notably, Alyssa performed the titular role of Venus in John Blow’s Venus & Adonis in May 2022 at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, VA as part of Early Music Access Project’s 2022 season. The month prior, Alyssa joined the award-winning medieval music ensemble Alkemie as a vocalist in their New England tour of Verdant Medicine, a program featuring works of Hildegard von Bingen.

Operatic roles include Elizabeth in composer Matthew Aucoin’s Second Nature and Morgana in Handel’s Alcina with Opera del West, as well as Alice (Countess Adele cover) in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory and Naiad in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos with Lowell House Opera. She developed the role of Fury 1 in the workshop production of REV. 23 which premiered in Boston in September 2017, written by librettist Cerise Jacobs and composed by Julian Wachner. Other favorite roles include Blondchen (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Skokànek (Příhody lišky Bystroušky), First Priestess (Iphigénie en Tauride), Cunegonde (u/s, Candide), Fire (u/s) and Nightingale (L’enfent et les Sortilèges), Clorinda (Cinderella), and Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte). Alyssa sings regularly at All Saint’s Episcopal Church on E 60th in Manhattan. Much of her earlier concert work was seen at world-renown Trinity Church Boston, including a recital of Love & Madness as part of the Saint Andrew’s Singer Series in 2018 and a performance as soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah in 2017. Alyssa also performed as a soloist in Schubert’s Magnificat and Haydn’s Missa Sancti Gabrielis as part of the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra’s Winner’s Concert, in fulfillment of winning their Collegiate Vocal Competition. Other major works include Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai and Paukenmesse. In 2018, she was awarded an honorable mention in the 34th Annual Young Texas Artists Music Competition.
